KATE Knight was returned as president of Gunnedah Can Assist, which is part of a network of 3,000 volunteers across 55 branches committed to supporting people living with cancer in rural and regional NSW.
Secretary Linda Lee was elected unopposed to her position, Kerry Towns is treasurer, with Lisa Ross elected vice-president, Leigh McPherson as assistant secretary and Mariann Nowland as assistant treasurer.
In her annual report, Kate Knight looked back on another eventful year with fundraising events, community grants and sponsorships.
“We now have more than 30 members which includes three new members for the year,” she said.
“Fundraising events held throughout the year included manning the gate at home rugby games, a Go Co movie luncheon, Court House Hotel meat raffles, Gunnedah Golf Club Ladies Day and catering for their luncheon, Club Gunnedah seafood raffles, Gunnedah Show gate alongside Gunnedah West Rotary, and manning the gate at Boggabri Drovers Campfire.”
Former local Lucy Ravenwood (Amos) also showed her support for cancer patients in the local area by donating funds raised from She Sings, her wonderful night of song and joy for women She Sings donated to help support those living with cancer in the local area. Brave the Shave with Jayde and Brendan, Rural Museum open day and Burger Bulls ‘Teann’s favourite burger’ were other fundraisers.
Community grants and donations were received from club grants through Club Gunnedah, Whitehaven Coal, Gunnedah Vintage Car Club, Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club, the fishing club and Forsyths Foundation as well as many anonymous donations.
“At Christmas time the Salvation Army once again donated Christmas hampers for us to distribute to our patients, which was very much appreciated by not only us but the patients too,” Kate Knight said.
In past financial year Can Assist Gunnedah assisted locals living with cancer on 96 occasions; this included 22 new patients.
“I understand we all have busy times with work, family and life in general,” she said.
“This is where I say thank you to our hardworking executive and volunteers; you are the backbone of this organisation. I have so much gratitude for each and every one of you. Without your support at fundraising events, Can Assist could not help local cancer patients in the capacity we do.”
Can Assist is committed to providing financial assistance, practical support and raising awareness of the inequities in rural and regional areas, with the volunteer network raising funds to ensure that country people are given the same opportunities and treatment choices as those who live in city centres. All cases are treated in strictest confidence.
Many of the Can Assist members have travelled the cancer journey themselves, either as patients or supporting loved ones, and they know of the financial struggles distance and long periods of treatment can bring.
Those living with cancer are encouraged to reach out to any committee member for support.
