COLLEEN FULLER, MAYOR, GUNNEDAH SHIRE COUNCIL
It’s the final day of AgQuip and as always, it has been a whirlwind of activity.
Thank you to everyone for their patience and cooperation during this busy period as road changes were put in place and there was a lot of traffic to negotiate.
We are grateful for the business AgQuip brings to Gunnedah; it’s such a great boost for our local economy. We welcome big events, and as our shire grows, we invite organisations and companies to consider us as an ideal host.
Between the spacious, historic Gunnedah Town Hall, the multi-purpose Civic, our many community halls, comfortable hotel function rooms, and a mix of pubs and clubs, we have spaces to suit a wide variety of activities. You will always be welcome in the Gunnedah Shire.
While we are speaking about events, Arts Gunnedah’s annual Art and Ceramic Exhibition got off to a great start on Friday night at the Gunnedah Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery. Unfortunately, I was unable to be there, and thanks goes to deputy mayor Kate McGrath for representing council at the opening. I understand it was well-attended and I’d like to congratulate all the winners who were announced on the night.
Congratulations also to Arts Gunnedah for hosting their 55th exhibition, featuring local and regional art works. There is so much to see, including detailed pottery, embroidery-style weaving, intricate printmaking, vivid landscapes and captivating portraits. I encourage you to visit the gallery on Chandos Street to view the wonderful works for yourself.
Following our ordinary council meeting last week, residents can have their say on numerous items on public exhibition, including:
A proposal to financially support Swimming Gunnedah’s Debutante Ball;
A proposal to financially support the 2026 Gunnedah and District Chamber of Commerce & Industry Local Business Awards and activities for Small Business Month in October;
A proposal to financially support the Gunnedah Golf Club Junior Western Open over three years; Council’s draft Code of Meeting Practice; Council’s draft Destination Management Plan; and New draft policies relating to alcohol-free zones and alcohol prohibited areas.
The resolutions and draft documents can be viewed online on council’s website or in-person at the customer service desk at council’s administration building at 63 Elgin Street, Gunnedah.
If you would like to submit feedback on any of these items or documents, please submit via the following methods:
Email [email protected]. Please include your name and contact details.
Post your submission to Gunnedah Shire Council, PO Box 63, Gunnedah, 2380, or hand it over the counter at council’s administration building at 63 Elgin Street, Gunnedah.
Please be aware that if you make a submission, other people may have access to your comments. This may be as a result of a report to a council meeting or as part of an application under the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009. Further details are available on request from council.
We have a number of live performances coming up at The Civic in the coming weeks – Golden and Goldilocks Rocks.
Golden is a musical showcase of iconic moments from much-loved films and stage shows, including My Fair Lady, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, A Star Is Born and more. The show will start at 3pm on Saturday 29 August. Tickets are $40 each or $35 for students.
Goldilocks Rocks is an educational, interactive performance following the well-known character of Goldilocks as she navigates potentially unsafe situations, learns to make safe choices, and reminds us to treat others with kindness and respect. This is an ideal outing for children aged 4 to 11, so if you’ve got children or grandchildren, it’s worthwhile booking some tickets for the shows at 11am or 1pm on Wednesday 16 September. Tickets are $15 each.
You can book Golden and Goldilocks Rocks on The Civic website or in-person at the candy bar.
It’s important to support events in our town so we can continue to enjoy the many cultural and educational treasures we have in Australia. You can see what’s coming up by signing up for the What’s On newsletter on council’s website, checking The Civic website, or phoning The Civic on (02) 67 40 2100.
