The Gunnedah Bulldogs are closing in on their first women’s tackle premiership with a grand final match against the Moree Boars set for Kitchener Park this weekend.
After a strong regular season, the Bulldogs enter the decider as minor premiers, finishing seven points clear of the Kootingal-Moonbi Roosters and Moree Boars.
The Bulldogs advanced straight to the grand final after a hard-fought 16–10 win over the Roosters in the major semi-final a fortnight ago.
They now have the chance to avenge last season’s grand final loss against the Boars in a big day of rugby league at Kitchener Park.
The Bulldogs have grown in confidence throughout the season, with the players continuing to improve both individually and as a team.
Club president David McCann said their willingness to work
for one another had been a major strength.
“The teamwork that they have, playing in the right spirit and just how hard they work for each other is what stands out,” he said.
“You can see them learning more each week and the improvements in individual players.”
While there will be nerves when the whistle blows, McCann said that excitement was part of what had made the team’s journey so special.
“Every week I like listening to them talk, they’re sort of jittery and nervous sometimes, but they always overcome it,” he said
The women have quickly become a major part of the Bulldogs, making their mark during the first full season of a full Group 4 women’s tackle competition.
“There has been a lot of work from the club and the group in getting a proper women’s competition going and these girls are a big part of that,” McCann said.
“They’ve become a really important part of the club.”
