New probationary officer welcomed to Gunnedah

Gunnedah has welcomed a new probationary officer to the local police command from the latest class to attest from the NSW Police Force Academy.

Probationary Officer Burness received a warm welcome to the shire, meeting with mayor Colleen Fuller and general manager Eric Groth.

Prob Off Burness was joined by Gunnedah sector officer-in-charge Inspector Tim Atkins and Oxley Police District commander Superintendent David Cooper.

The introduction formed part of a regular meeting held between Insp Atkins, Cr Fuller and Mr Groth.

Looking for a career change, Prob Off Burness had previously worked in disability services.

Prob Off Burness, who is originally from the north coast, has enjoyed the tree change to Gunnedah with his family.

“Gunnedah is great. We’re finding it really good,” he said.

“I’m excited to get into doing some good stuff for the community.”

Prob Off Burness was part of the academy’s large cohort which marked its graduation on 21 August.

The graduation of 353 probationary constables was the largest to attest from the academy in 14 years.

As part of the process, Prob Off Burness completed four months of online education followed by four months at the academy.

“The academy was a really great learning experience,” he said.

Cr Fuller was thrilled to welcome Prob Off Burness to the shire and said the council would continue to advocate for increased police resources.

“Our community has been very clear about the need for increased police resources, and council has been proud to support that advocacy through initiatives such as petitions for 24-hour policing in Gunnedah,” Cr Fuller said.

“While there is still more work to do, it is important that we acknowledge positive steps forward when they happen.

“We are pleased to welcome a new probationary constable to the Gunnedah policing community, providing additional on-the-ground support for our region.

“Council will continue to advocate for the services and resources our community deserves, while working closely with police and other stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes.”

Cr Fuller said strong partnerships between the council, police and the community are essential in ensuring Gunnedah Shire remains a safe and welcoming place to live, work and raise a family.
