Gunnedah Riding for Disabled makes final call for volunteers

Gunnedah Riding for the Disabled (RDA) is making a final call for volunteers.

The organisation has been in limbo this year due to a shortage of helpers.

For almost 40 years, they have assisted disabled people through equine therapy.

A special meeting has been convened for later this month, with the RDA seeking further volunteers prior to its annual general meeting next year.

If the RDA is unable to attract new volunteers, it will likely fold.

The charity’s executive committee is predominantly made up of locals aged in their 70s, many involved with the cause for a long time, and they have made a plea to see some younger people step up and take the reins.

The current executive is looking to step down and hopes new members will ensure the important work of RDA continues.

Renee Hooke, who has enjoyed the fulfilling work the RDA provides to the community, explained that new members would be supported by the outgoing office bearers.

“We really would love to see some fresh blood come in and take ownership,” Renee said.

“It’s very rewarding.

“The joy it brings to the children is fantastic.”

Renee said the organisation had all the necessary tack and carts.

Some of their beloved horses are getting older, with a need for new horses in the not-too-distant future.

To be able to facilitate sessions safely, at least three people are needed to take one child for a ride.

Previously, the RDA would operate every second Friday during the school term.

Renee praised Gunnedah High School for previously allowing year 10 students to assist.

Renee has encouraged interested community members to attend the special meeting at 10am on 25 September, at the RDA shed at the Gunnedah Showgrounds.
