FIONA SILLS, GUNNEDAH SHIRE LIBRARY

Spotlight: TAKE A BREAK

Just a reminder that the library will be closed on Monday 5 October for the long weekend.

Surprisingly, this public holiday is not for the NRL Grand Final, instead marking an important step in working conditions for ordinary Australians.

Officially known as Labour Day, it celebrates the introduction of the 8-hour working day by NSW Parliament in 1885. Previously, employees could be expected to work 10-12 hour days, 6 days a week for low wages, with no paid leave or protection if they were injured.

The school holiday programme continues next week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We have free Singalong & Storytime and Book Buddies sessions each morning at 10.30am, and Crafty Creations at 3.30pm for older children, at a charge of $3.00. Select from a 3D turtle, beaded butterflies, or a peacock collage. Come along and enter our Springtime Seek and Find to go into the draw for a library pack.

Spotlight: GET INTO GARDENING

Looking for some horticultural inspiration? Want to summer-proof your backyard?

Come to the library for guidance on getting your garden under control, starting your own veggie patch or doing your bit for the environment.

Pick up Tim Pilgrim’s “Wild by Design”, “The Naturally Beautiful Garden” by Kathryn Bradley-Hole or “Design of the Times” by Rosefiend Cordell for inspiration, “Vegetable Gardening for Beginners” by Samantha Johnson and “Good Life Growing” by Hannah Moloney for a productive garden pep-talk, and “Planting for Native Birds, Bees and Butterflies” by Jaclyn Crupi, “Future Proof Your Garden” by Angus Stewart or Tom Massey’s “Resilient Garden” to ensure your plants last the distance.

Don’t forget: the library has copies of Gardening Australia, Better Homes and Gardens and Australian House and Garden ready to be borrowed!

Spotlight: NEW BOOKS

“The Forget-Me-Not Library” by Heather Webber demonstrates that the path to happiness is rarely straight. Juliet and Tallulah have each had their lives spectacularly upended and are seeking a place to call home. When they discover the Forget-Me-Not Library, where treasured memories are stored between the pages, they find friendship, direction and a place to belong.

Sabrina’s new Melbourne café is struggling and, with no special someone in the picture, the boyfriend clause in her loan agreement means she will need to pay the amount in its entirety. Cue the fake boyfriend. But it is probably not a good idea to use the name and description of her grumpy neighbour, particularly when your family has a problem with boundaries… Find out what happens next in “The Boyfriend Clause” (AFR BLA) by Bridie Blake.

Crafty little crochet projects abound in “Amigurumi Affirmations” (746.43 SAR) by Lee Sartori. These sweet little emotional support characters will help you spark joy and sprinkle a little positivity into your day. Make them as personal little pick-me-ups or give them as a gift, with easy-to-follow instructions.
