The Gunnedah RSL Sub-Branch and the wider community will come together on Friday, April 25, to commemorate Anzac Day—a day that marks the spirit of sacrifice and courage shown by the men and women who served in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during World War I, and all service personnel who have followed in their footsteps.
This year, the Gunnedah RSL Sub-Branch will host two services at the Gunnedah Cenotaph – a dawn service at 5.30am and a main service starting with the Anzac Day march at 10:30am.
Anzac Day Services
Dawn Service: 5.30am at the Gunnedah Cenotaph. This service will be followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at Club Gunnedah.
Day Service: Starting with the Anzac Day march at 10.30am, followed by the main service at the Gunnedah Cenotaph on Conadilly Street.
Following the day’s formal services, the Gunnedah RSL Sub-Branch will host an Anzac Day lunch at Club Gunnedah, inviting all members, guests, and the community to come together for reflection and fellowship.
A Historical Day of Remembrance
Anzac Day, observed annually on April 25, is a day of national remembrance in Australia and New Zealand. It was first commemorated in 1916 to mark the anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign, where ANZAC forces landed in Turkey on April 25, 1915, during World War I.
Although the Gallipoli campaign ended in failure, the bravery, endurance, and sacrifice of the Anzac soldiers became a defining moment in the identity of both nations.
Over the years, Anzac Day has evolved into a day not only to
remember the First World War but also to honour the sacrifices of all men and women who have served in subsequent conflicts and peacekeeping missions.
It’s a day where communities come together to reflect on the profound impact of war and the values of courage, mateship, and sacrifice.
Gunnedah RSL Sub-Branch president, Anthony Adams, spoke on the significance of the day:
“Anzac Day is more than just a day of commemoration – it is an important time for us all to come together and reflect on the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.
“It is a time to remember the soldiers who fought during the First World War, as well as the many who have served in subsequent conflicts, from the Second World War to Afghanistan and beyond.
Their courage continues to shape our nation’s identity, and it is crucial that we honour their service and sacrifice,” Mr Adams said.
Anzac Day Memorabilia
Leading up to Anzac Day, the Gunnedah RSL Sub-Branch will be selling Anzac Day memorabilia outside local supermarkets.
A variety of items will be available for purchase, including red poppies, commemorative pins, and other keepsakes, as well as Anzac Day biscuits.
Proceeds from the sales will directly support the sub-branch’s ongoing work in supporting veterans and commemorating their service.
“We are proud to offer a range of items that allow the community to show their support and respect for those who have served,” Mr Adams added.
“We encourage everyone to stop by and contribute to this important cause, whether it’s by making a purchase, or simply taking a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Anzac Day.”
