A former senior lifeguard at Gunnedah Memorial Pool, Cam McFarlane, has been recognised at Royal Life Saving’s premier event, with a prestigious Aqua award for excellence in training and education.
There was widespread regret among pool users when Cam left his position at Gunnedah in August last year to fulfill his dream of spreading the word about reducing the numbers of deaths from drowning and life saving techniques.
Cam’s award in the Excellence in Training and Education category recognises individuals, local governments or organisations who have made a difference or innovative approach to the implementation of a swimming, lifesaving training or education program.
Cams said he felt very proud but also humbled to accept the prestigious excellence honour award for training and education.
“I wish to make a very special mention and thank all of my sponsors, especially Rotary clubs and aquatic industry organisations for supporting me,” Cam said.
“This enables me to deliver CPR education throughout many NSW schools and to instil young lives with a vital lifesaving skill.
“I am now focusing on and hoping to follow through in marking my goal of 100,000 students in CPR education across NSW and internationally in the future – CPR can and does save lives.”
The Aquas is Royal Life Saving’s premier event, a night of celebration that honours the extraordinary contributions and dedication of individuals and organisations working to prevent drowning and promote aquatic participation across NSW/ACT.
This year is particularly special as the organisation marks its 130th anniversary, expanding the award categories to reflect not only the rich history but the incredible diversity of the people, programs, and services that shape its mission today.
This year, RLS has broadened its scope to recognise excellence across the community, government, industry, lifesaving sport, and corporate sectors. These awards celebrate remarkable achievements, innovations, and leadership that drive the ongoing efforts to make aquatic environments safer and more inclusive for all.
After six years on the pool deck at Gunnedah, the popular senior lifeguard began a journey to follow his passion teaching CPR in schools and assisting others in the community to learn this life saving skill and after less than a year he has been officially recognised.
