New police officers started duties in the Gunnedah and Tamworth communities earlier this week.

Probationary Constable Tye McCahon reported for duty in Gunnedah and will complete 12 months of on-the-job training under the supervision and support of senior local police. Another officer will be based in Tamworth.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said probationary constables are an important part of the local police force, undertaking a wide range of jobs and responding to various incidents.

“Our newest probationary constables will be well supported by experienced officers within the district who will continue to guide them through their first 12 months on the job,” he said. “Community safety continues to be a focus for local police, and I’m continuing to push for greater resources to support them.

“Our community has been calling on greater police resources. The Time for Change petition reached 22,015 signatures and will be debated later this month. I look forward to bringing the petition to parliament on behalf of the community and calling for greater police resources, tougher laws, and consequences for actions.

“I also want a division of PolAir to be based in Tamworth, giving local police support from the air.”
