Gunnedah Speedway hosted a karting event for the first time last month as this venue was used for this year’s Speedway Karting Association of Australasia (SKAA) NSW Speedway Kart Championship.

This year was East Coast Speedway Kart Club’s turn to host, after the South Coast-based and Sydney-based speedway kart clubs had hosted the annual event in recent years.

Eighty competitors came from around NSW, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania, as participants ranged from 7 to 70 years of age. Categories were sub juniors (7-10 years), juniors (10-16), junior standard (13-16), standard light (senior), standard heavy (senior), modified (senior), outlaws (senior), and 125cc non gear box (senior).

Four members from Gunnedah took part, with Heidi Barnes and Hayley Crumbley in the sub juniors while Micah Barnes and Gordon Crumbley were in the senior 125 non gear box division.

Hayley placed sixth while Heidi and Micah each gained a seventh placing, with Gordon coming 11th.

In the senior classes, some drivers reached speeds of 110kmh.

Micah, who was also the event organiser, said the weather was great while the track was in good condition.

“The event was a great success with the help of the Sydney Kart Club and other members of the sport helping out, and especially to the track promoter Barry Towers and all of his track helpers,” he said.

“Go karts is the root sport of all top drivers in the world and it’s where everyone learns their great ability to drive.”

Thanks were offered to all sponsors and volunteers.
