In a dramatic week in federal politics, the federal Nationals and Liberal parties have formally parted ways.

Nationals leader David Littleproud announced on Tuesday the party would not be re-entering a Coalition agreement with the Liberals.

Prior to this announcement, Member-elect for Parkes and former Gunnedah mayor Jamie Chaffey congratulated both sides of the Coalition on their party leadership positions.

“This was my first National’s Party Room meeting since being elected, and as is the precedent after every election, a secret ballot was held for the leadership team,” Mr Chaffey said.

“Congratulations to David Littleproud MP on his re-election as leader, to Kevin Hogan MP on becoming deputy leader, and to Senator Bridget McKenzie on her re-election as leader of The Nationals in the Senate.

“Senator Matthew Canavan also put up his hand for the leadership, and although he was unsuccessful, he stood up for what he believes in.

“Senator Susan McDonald was also unsuccessful in her bid for deputy leader but I have no doubt both Matt and Susan will continue to be strong voices in the Nationals’ party room.

“This week the Liberal Party have also selected a new leadership team with Sussan Ley being elected as the Leader of the Opposition, and Ted O’Brien as the new Deputy Leader. Congratulations to both Sussan and Ted on their new roles and I wish them all the best, because the country needs a strong Opposition to hold the Labor Government to account, which is what I plan to do for the people of the Parkes electorate.

“I’m proud to be a member of The National Party, with more than 100 years of serving regional NSW.

“I’m looking forward to the polls being declared by the Australian Electoral Commission so I can get on with the job of representing the great people of the Parkes electorate.”
