The future of rugby union in the New England and North West was on show at the Gunnedah-based Donnelly Fields last Sunday as numerous clubs converged for a junior gala day.
Gunnedah, Armidale, Tamworth, Barraba-Walcha, Inverell, Quirindi, Scone, Narrabri, Moree, Coonabarabran, Walgett and Coonamble were represented, while there were age groups from U6s to U12s.
There were mixed boys and girls teams in the U6s, U8s, U10s and U12s, while a new inclusion this year was an U10 and U12 girls 7s competition which was a huge hit.
There were more than 60 participants in the U6 ‘try rugby’ activities, and about 40 participants in the U10 and U12 girls 7s.
Gunnedah Junior Rugby Club president Josh Leys said there were 34 teams and more than 45 games while seven fields were used, with the games played in good spirits.
Scores were not recorded, with Leys saying the focus at gala days “is getting as many kids on the park as possible to enjoy rugby”.
“From all reports received and everything I witnessed over the day, everyone had a great day,” he said.
“With the younger age groups it’s all about developing skills levels and growing their rugby IQ.
“Throughout the age groups it’s about developing friends, not only through their own teams but throughout the zone.”
Leys acknowledged the work of the volunteers and parents, as well as those who travelled long distances to be a part of the event.
