Gunnedah horse trainer Gavin Groth claimed a winning double for the third time in two weeks, as he had two victories at the Mallawa Picnic Races last Saturday.
Groth’s top placings were in the first and fourth races, while he also had two runner-up placings and a ninth placing in other races.
These results followed wins for the Groth-trained Injair and Sian at Gunnedah on May 25, and wins for Gloryess and Pop Quiz at Tamworth on May 31.
The first two races at Mallawa were 1200m, and the next two were 1000m before races five and six were 1400m on a track rated Good.
The Groth-trained and Ricky Blewitt-ridden Showtime Sassy won the opening race by a mere 0.2 of a length after being the second favourite in a field of 10.
It was Showtime Sassy’s first win since July 22 last year, when the mare won at Gunnedah.
In race two at Mallawa, the Groth-trained and Paul Zerafa-ridden Barrieanna finished 1.2 lengths behind the victor after Barrieanna was the second favourite in a field of eight.
The Groth-trained and Zerafa-ridden La Mia Via finished 0.6 of a length behind the top placegetter in race three, after La Mia Via was the third favourite in a field of seven.
The Groth-trained and Blewitt-ridden Annual was the last favourite in a field of five in race four, before winning by two lengths.
Annual’s previous win was on a Queanbeyan track rated a Heavy 8, a little over 18 months earlier.
In the final race at Mallawa, the Groth-trained and Zerafa-ridden Norman ran last after being the equal-fifth favourite.
