Analysis by solar battery supplier estimated less than one per cent of homes in the NSW England region have solar batteries installed despite almost half using some form of solar power.

According to data by Empower Energy, about 43 per cent of free standing and semi-attached homes in the NSW New England already have rooftop solar, or about 30,000 homes.

In the Gunnedah shire, about 2225 homes have rooftop solar and the average system size is 4.64kW.

Yet the company estimated that less than one per cent have installed a home battery.

The Australia government says household batteries can assist in balancing electricity supply and demand across the whole grid. This should reduce costs to all households over time.

From July 1, 2025, households and small businesses may be eligible for around a 30 per cent discount on the upfront cost of installing small-scale battery systems. The discount will be based on the solar battery’s usable capacity and will gradually decrease until 2030.

A NSW battery discount is available for battery installations up until Monday, June 30.
