More than 1300 signatures have been received for the petition calling for 24-hour policing in Gunnedah.

The e-petition titled ‘Urgent Resourcing and 24-Hour Staffing of Gunnedah Police Station’ was submitted to the NSW Legislative Assembly last month by the Gunnedah Chamber of Commerce with support from Kevin Anderson MP and Gunnedah Shire Council.

As of Thursday, October 23, a total of 1329 signatures had been tallied but the e-petition required a minimum of 20,000 to meet the threshold for debate in the NSW Parliament.

The petition is asking the Legislative Assembly to call on the government to:

1. Implement 24-hour on-site staffing at Gunnedah Police Station, ensuring officers are available to respond in real-time to overnight incidents.

2. Increase police resourcing in Gunnedah, including staffing levels, patrol capability, and crime prevention units.

3. Introduce a dedicated, locally-answered Gunnedah police phone line so that calls made to the station during emergencies or disturbances are answered and actioned by on-site officers – rather than being redirected to distant locations.

The Gunnedah e-petition will remain open until early March 2026.

Many of other e-petitions currently listed with the Legislative Assembly – some which are due to expire soon – have so far received only several hundred signatures each, well below the threshold required to initiate debate in parliament.
