Gunnedah was no match for Armidale in U13 representative cricket at Donnelly Fields last Sunday, as the visitors won by 121 runs.
Armidale was dismissed for 161 in 34.4 overs after all 11 Gunnedah players rolled the arm over, and then Gunnedah succumbed in just 16.2 overs while 17 of its 40 runs came from sundries.
Last Sunday’s hefty loss came after Gunnedah won its previous match on forfeit, following an 86-run loss to Tamworth Gold in round one a week earlier.
Armidale’s opening partnership was interesting, as Caleb Davies struck six fours and a six in his 44 off 37 balls while Josey Brummell faced 31 balls without scoring.
The ninth over cost 20 runs, starting with a no-ball which was dispatched over the boundary before Bismarck Hoddle’s first two legal deliveries cost four runs apiece.
Bismarck dismissed both openers in his next over as Armidale stumbled from 0-64 to 2-65, with Caleb caught by Nicholas Swain before Josey was bowled.
Kallie Walters also claimed a wicket after being on the receiving end of a brief onslaught. Jake Simpson hit a six in her second over and three successive fours in her third over, before Kallie had him caught at the wicket by the bowler’s older sister Marnee.
Joe Swain held a catch off his cousin Nicholas Swain, before Marnee held a catch at square leg off Reuben West.
Joe held a catch off his own bowling before another catch to Marnee at square leg left Armidale 7-130 in the 27th over.
Marnee’s first delivery struck the top of the leg-stump, before the ninth wicket fell when Sullivan Pine lofted a catch to Bismarck.
The last wicket pair added 13 runs before a caught-and-bowled to Marnee was her fourth catch in her third different position.
Although Gunnedah conceded 19 runs in wides and nine in no-balls, several Gunnedah bowlers had impressive figures. Joe was the pick, with 2-4 in three overs.
Reuben took 1-1 in his only over, and Linden Miller’s two overs cost only a single run while Nate Partridge finished with 1-16 from six overs.
Six Gunnedah players were subsequently dismissed without scoring, and then the final batter was not out without scoring.
The top score was eight from Reuben, after he came to the crease at the fall of the first wicket.
Gunnedah was 1-0 after three balls, and then 4-6 following three wickets to Sageeth Jayawardena in the fourth over.
A run out made the score 5-8, before Gunnedah went from 5-20 to 8-20 following two quick wickets to Patrick Gordon and one to Henry Blomfield.
After Reuben had hit a four in the sixth over, Harry Langdon opened his account with a boundary during the ninth wicket stand which doubled the total before the final two wickets fell without the addition of a run.
Gunnedah’s next fixture will be against Tamworth Blue at Riverside on November 23.
Armidale 161 (Caleb Davies 44; Joe Swain 2-4, Marnee Walters 2-13) defeated Gunnedah 40 (Sageeth Jayawardena 3-9, Patrick Gordon 2-1) by 121 runs.
