We’re already half-way through February, which means Gunnedah Shire’s latest art exhibition – Ageing to Create – is open at the Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery.

What an absolute delight to attend, and open, this incredible exhibition created by seniors who attended GoCo Community Care’s Monday and Friday Social Support Groups in 2025.

The vivid installation of artworks includes a wide range of mediums such as macramé, painting, paper-mâché, and other hands-on crafting techniques.

This is a very special collection and I’d like to congratulate the participants who are aged 58 to 98 for their creativity and for giving new things a go. I’d also like to congratulate GoCo on such a wonderful initiative, which provides so many benefits for our seniors, including socialisation, enhancing cognitive function, improving tactile, fine motor and problem-solving skills, and fostering a sense of accomplishment.

Talking to some of the seniors, I was so impressed by what they had achieved over the course of last year and it was encouraging to hear of the friendships they formed through the program, which also includes armchair travel, singing and games.

Ageing to Create is open until Friday, March 20, so pop along to the gallery in Chandos Street and take a look at this colourful collection.

We’re back to business on Wednesday for the first council meeting of the year. The ordinary council meeting is open to the public and I invite you to join us at 4:30pm in the chambers in Elgin Street. If you can’t attend in person, but would still like to be a part of it, you can watch the meeting live through council’s website. To see what is being discussed this month, take a look at the meeting agenda and business papers on the website.

Council’s economy and growth team are busy preparing for the Gunnedah Youth Expo and are on the lookout for businesses, services, education providers and industries to set up in the Cultural Precinct on Thursday, April 23.

The annual event in NSW Youth Week is the ideal way for young people in Gunnedah and surrounds to find out what is available to them in the form of employment, traineeships, apprenticeships and further education.

I encourage high schools in Gunnedah and surrounds to get on board and take along their students so they can explore future career pathways. Parents and carers are also welcome to attend this free event.

There will be a focus on agriculture this year, and ag-based entities are encouraged to get their registration in early for the dedicated area in the Smithurst Theatre.

To register as a stallholder for the Youth Expo, visit The Civic website or ring the economy and growth team at council to discuss your options.

I’ll have more news to share in a fortnight.
