It was a case of so near and yet so far for the Gunnedah South Public School boys cricket team in a tight and hard-fought contest with Quirindi Public School on Monday last week.
In round three of the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) knockout competition, host team Quirindi tallied 94 runs in the 25-overs-per-side fixture before Gunnedah South finished with 91.
Gunnedah South’s Otis Johnston claimed 2-13 with his leg-spinners, and was well supported by Chase Herbert who built pressure and restricted the scoring while claiming 1-20.
Cooper Cannon nabbed 1-5 as he bowled with great control and accuracy.
Lachlan Finnerty also applied relentless pressure on the Quirindi batters and helped keep the run rate under control, while Dustin Crawford was unlucky not to capture a wicket as he consistently troubled the batters with his accuracy.
The fielders showed skill and awareness, taking some great catches while Bailey Craig and Cohen McDonald consistently saved runs.
Darby Maher impressed as wicketkeeper, showing sharp reflexes and taking the ball cleanly while supporting the bowlers.
Bailey Irwin led the way in the run chase with a superb 24 not out, while showing great composure under pressure.
Oscar De Groot (22) and Jack Wright (19) displayed confidence, control, and excellent shot selection.
A determined team effort from the visitors took the game right down to the final overs, but the hosts ultimately secured the victory.
Gunnedah South coach Eddie McGuirk said, “Although the result did not go their way, Gunnedah South should be incredibly proud of their performance.
“The team displayed resilience, teamwork, and excellent sportsmanship in a very competitive match.”
