With Australian forces often involved in overseas conflicts, the Militia has played an important role in the protection of borders and local communities. The term Australian Militia refers to the part-time, reserve component of the Australian Army, historically known as the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) or Australian Citizen Military Force (ACMF). Police investigate suspicious fire in Gunnedah

Police are investigating a suspicious fire in Gunnedah earlier this morning. The fire occurred at an unoccupied residence on Mathias Road, adjacent to the Kamilaroi Highway heading towards Boggabri. The property is believed to have been abandoned for several years. It was one of several call-outs overnight for local firefighters. Gunnedah firefighters also responded to a house fire at Mullaley. Fire crews from Gunnedah, which assisted the Rural Fire Service at the incident, arrived to find the structure fully alight. The Nombi Street residence was unable to be saved. Inquiry established for council elections

Council elections could be set for a shake-up under proposed new legislation currently before NSW Parliament. The Local Government Amendment (Elections) Bill 2025 is also subject to a NSW Upper House inquiry. The bill proposes a number of amendments to the Local Government Act 1993 and the Local Government (General) Regulation 2021. This includes a requirement that all local council elections be administered by the NSW Electoral Commissioner only, effectively prohibiting the use of private electoral service providers to administer elections.
