Hammond’s ‘daily drive’ wins grand champion at 2025 Gunnedah Ute Show

Shayne Hammond’s beloved VY Holden was judged grand champion ute for the 2025 Gunnedah Show. The Tamworth-based exhibitor said his 2004 model Holden was now not only an award-winning vehicle, it was also his “daily drive” for his work commute. “I’m a truck driver by day but I’ve always loved utes since I was young,” Mr Hammond said. The first-time Gunnedah Show winner has owned the ute for about four years and has since fitted 15 aerials and 34 lights to his pride and joy. Powerstone powers home as trainer’s apprentice shines

Gunnedah trainer Gavin Groth and his apprentice Hannah Johnston relished victory for Powerstone for the second time, as the mare won race five at Coonabarabran last Saturday. After winning a race at Gunnedah on March 15, the Groth-trained and Johnston-ridden mare had a disappointing 11th placing at Wellington on March 28 before returning to its winning ways despite encountering a difficult barrier draw. Promising signs for new-look Bulldogs in AFL trial

A late fightback from the Gunnedah Bulldogs narrowly failed to produce an unlikely victory in last Saturday’s senior AFL trial match at Wolseley Park. Fellow AFL North West team the Tamworth Kangaroos held a handy lead throughout the match before finishing a mere one point in front as the Bulldogs kicked a goal right on full-time. The players never paid attention to the score throughout the game as the scoreboard wasn’t used, and it was only at full-time that the teams realised how tight the result was. St Mary’s swimmer sets record

Josh Spinks won a medal and broke a record as he was among seven students from St Mary’s College (Gunnedah) competing at last week’s NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC) Swimming Championships in Sydney. This year’s championships were combined with the NSW Catholic Primary Schools (NSWCPS) event at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre (SOPAC), with NSWCCC having events spread over last Wednesday and Thursday to allow more time between some events.
