Gunnedah Speedway racers Kevin, Trent and Todd Keeler put the pedal to the metal at the Blue Vale Road track on Saturday night, all in honour of their late father and grandfather.
Racers from across NSW converged on Gunnedah to compete in the Stan Keeler Classic, named in honour of the late speedway stalwart.
Stan’s son, Kevin, and grandsons, Trent and Todd, had the honour of leading the opening parade of vehicles.
A racer, chief steward and a dedicated speedway lover, the track was Stan’s second home and his devotion to the sport has been the source of inspiration for his family who continues to drive in his honour.
In a fitting tribute to his grandfather, Trent raced to victory to claim top spot in the Stan Keeler Classic.
Following the presentation of trophies, the family assembled around a memorial plaque honouring Stan’s enduring commitment to speedway.
Earlier in the night, Mikayla Whaler claimed top spot in the Junior New Stars, with Nola Davies in second place and Hayley Pope third.
Narrabri’s Wyatt Lawler was triumphant in the Junior All Stars, with Lachie Goldie second and Levi Payne third.
Jeremy Keynes claimed first place in the Fender Benders, with Steve West second and Daniel Cronin third.
Justin Partridge was first in Four Cylinders, with Dave Partridge second and Scott Edwards third.
In the Outlaws, Dion Bennett was in top position, Mark Towers second and Peter Renshaw third.
Mark Towers took out first place in Late Models, with Mark Letham second and Damien Hodges third.
The feature of the night, the Stan Keeler Classic, saw Trent Keeler in first position, Scott Perkins second and Dave Hamilton third.
Gunnedah Speedway promoter Barry Towers said Saturday’s race night was to honour and say thank you to Stan for his huge input into speedway.
Towers praised the crew for preparing the grounds and track for the Weeks of Speed meeting which saw a strong turnout of spectators.
“It was a very hot week and the track needed lots of water,” Towers said.
“The track was a little dusty to start but ended up a good rut free track.
“A big thanks to the whole Gunnedah crew for another successful night.”
