A wet track meant it was not the turn out Wean Picnic Race Club had hoped on Sunday – the 90th anniversary of the annual race meet.
After wet weather forced the postponement of Saturday’s six-race card, the crowd was down significantly on the few thousand punters organisers had hoped for.
“The crowd was down to not much,” committee member John Perkins said.
“We had a lot of buses cancelled.
“We still we had a great day … very good racing and good entries for fashions on the field.”
After the event was transferred to Sunday, Mr Perkins said a few horses dropped off the 50-odd nominations received on Tuesday for the Wean race fields but it was still a quality event.
“We had entries from everywhere … Armidale, Muswellbrook, Gilgandra,” he said.
He also vowed the event would return bigger and better next year.
“We don’t want the Wean races to stop,” he said.
