There are 22 very happy Woolworths workers in Gunnedah after their $2 syndicate won more than $276,000 in last night’s Powerball jackpot.
Each member of the syndicate, who are all from Gunnedah, contributed about $2 and won about $12,500 each.
The Gunnedah syndicate was one just nine division two winners across the country who each took home $276,036.95.
The syndicate also won division 8 – bringing their grand total winnings to $276,082.65
The Gunnedah Times spoke with one of the lucky winners on Friday who recalled the moment they discovered they had won.
“I was in the car just finishing work and I checked my tickets … and I froze,” the Gunnedah winner said.
“So I went back checked it again and again and it said the same numbers.
“I went all shaky and instantly called everyone.
“No one believed me, I didn’t even believe it.”
Before the draw, the Gunnedah winner had read there was a 1-in-7 million chance of winning division 2.
The significance of the moment was still being felt across the Woolworths store on Friday morning.
“People were crying in the store this morning, it was very emotional,” the winner said.
“One of people who won, she plays every week and has never won more than just to play the next week.”
Another of the Woolworths winners said the Gunnedah syndicate’s success was well deserved.
“[The money] is going to a lot of good people, a lot of people who need it,” they said.
“The energy is very high at work at the moment.”
One of the Gunnedah winners planned to use their prize money to take a “well-deserved break”. The other might take a holiday but planned to invest most into savings to buy a house.
In addition to the $150 million division one winner – a man from Adelaide – there were 4,433,211 winners across divisions two to nine in last night’s Powerball draw who collectively took home more than $89.3 million.
