It was a celebration of community at Gunnedah’s Family Fun Day this month.
Hosted by Gunida Gunyah Aboriginal Corporation through the Social Engagement and Community Employment Project, the event aimed to bring together community members.
Indigenous elder Len Walters delivered a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony and a special yarn. His story centred around a fishing trip to a water hole and closed with the message of unity “we all come from the same fish”.
The family fun day held at the Gunnedah Rugby Club included free entry, meals and entertainment for those in attendance.
The audience was treated to a special live performance by Redfern-based reggae fusion group, Green Hand Band.
Children also enjoyed pony rides, an animal show by travelling group Reptiles on the Go, Jurassic Jack and his dinosaur friends, hours of face painting, craft time and bouncing on the many jumping castles available, among other activities.
Gunida Gunyah organisation service officer Stephanie Cameron said the family day was funded by NSW Reconstruction Authority’s COVID Community Connection and Wellbeing Program and run in partnership with a Gunnedah-based working group.
“A working group of indigenous members developed a strategy to help support the Gunnedah community and future funding grants as well as delivering events and activities in the community,” Ms Cameron said.
The idea for the fun day came about after feedback from community surveys and was warmly received by those in attendance.
“It’s a great way for the community to come together as one and have fun,” Ms Cameron said.
