Gunnedah Jockey Club has set its sights on a bumper Christmas calendar despite a wet weather washout forcing the cancellation of last weekend’s Manilla Cup.

The jockey club said heavy rain in the preceding days meant Gunnedah’s Riverside Racecourse still required at least another day of good weather to dry out.

The track will now undergo dethatching, top dressing and more maintenance ahead of the race club’s premier event of the season – the Christmas Hams Race Day on December 7.

At least 12 bookings, featuring about 300 people, have already been taken for the event.

Many businesses in the Gunnedah region and beyond book the race day’s marquee facilities for Christmas work functions.

A hot buffet lunch will be available for marquee bookings, with cold meat and sandwich boxes also available.

A champagne bar will complement the traditional canteen and bar facilities as well.

Music entertainment will be provided by local artist Sam Snape and organisers hoped to secure services of the mobile betting van. This

would be in addition to the usual bookmaker and betting facilities.

There will be awards for Fashions in the Field, as well as junior best-dressed competitions.

A jumping castle and face painting activities will also be available for children.
