The race day fashions’ contest was as hot as the weather last Saturday.
Thousands attended Riverside Racecourse for Gunnedah Jockey Club’s Christmas Race Day – one of its biggest events of the year.
A sizzling summer afternoon in Gunnedah did little to dampen enthusiasm of trackside patrons who turned out by the car and bus load for the seven-race card. Such was the event’s popularity – often favoured by workplaces for Christmas parties – the jockey club was forced to acquire additional marquees to cater for demand last weekend.
The women’s fashions in the field contest was won by Gunnedah’s Laura Higgins and runner-up was Hollie Crawford.
In the men’s stakes, Jarrod McLawrence from Gunnedah was a strong contender sporting a green-gold Australiana theme.
In the end, judges declared Jake Dawson the deserved winner and Corey Mallia, runner-up.
Trackside temperatures reached 33 degrees at Gunnedah on Saturday afternoon and remained above 30 degrees until late into the evening.
