St Joseph’s parishioners celebrated Australia Day at Sunday morning Mass with the church adorned with Australian flags and koalas enjoying gum leaves on the altar railings.
The entrance hymn, I Am Australian was sung with great gusto, and the closing national anthem, Advance Australia Fair, rounded off a patriotic celebration.
Proud of his Australian citizenship, Filipino born parish priest Fr Abmar Dumayag spoke with great enthusiasm about his adopted home and its national day.
Parishioner Vince Tydd received congratulations on his Australia Day Good Neighbour award announced the previous evening. Vince was nominated by friends on a neighbouring property at Kelvin, noting that if ever anyone needed anything, Vince was there. Vince has also been a long-serving volunteer with the St Vincent de Paul society and other church organisations. He said enjoyed helping others and was honoured to receive the award.
Mass was followed by an Aussie style morning tea, with lamingtons, damper and golden syrup, Iced VoVos and other goodies.
