Gunnedah recorded a nervous 10-run win on the first innings in the two-day cricket clash with Bective East at Kitchener Park.
Bective East was dismissed for 163 last Saturday when needing 174 for first-innings points, having been 8-47 and in danger of outright defeat.
The visitors began the day at 6-46 in reply to Gunnedah’s 173, and lost two wickets in three balls in the first over.
Jonah Cameron brought up a five-wicket haul in memorable style as his dad Darrin held a catch, and then the bowler’s third successful lbw appeal of the innings gave him temporary figures of 6-7 from six overs.
Cameron finished with 6-28 from 15 overs, but Gunnedah missed James McGowan on day two after he captured 2-25 from seven overs on day one.
With the visitors in huge trouble, the hosts were unable to finish off the job and weren’t helped by some dropped catches. Still, there was a chance to enforce the follow-on when the ninth wicket fell with the total on 90.
Having grafted his way to 20, Liam Griffiths had his off-stump dislodged as he offered no stroke to a Peter McCormack delivery which pitched well outside the stumps and cut back in.
Harry Morrow not only wrecked Gunnedah’s outright victory hopes, but also gave Bective East a chance of a miracle first-innings win as he pushed the score along while Shahid Khalfan supported him during the final wicket stand.
Seventeen runs from Josh Green’s only over took the total to 9-130, before Jaycob Price conceded 11 runs in his sole over.
Khalfan was on 21, while Morrow raced to 74 before falling to a juggling catch by Josh Langdon.
There seemed little point continuing the match, but Gunnedah batted for 22 overs before the teams called it quits at 4.19pm.
Langdon and Green were content to play defensively as only 38 runs were scored, although Langdon recorded four fours as he punished the occasional loose ball.
Langdon finished on 23 not out while Green made 11 not out, after Khalfan conceded only a single run in his five overs.
Gunnedah 173 (Jonah Cameron 33, Josh Green 27; Todd Burgess 4-21, Cooper Jones 2-21) and 0-38 defeated Bective East 163 (Harry Morrow 74; Jonah Cameron 6-28) by 10 runs on the first innings.
Six of the best: Jonah Cameron captured six wickets for Gunnedah.
