The weather is getting cool but temperatures are rising with footy fever back at the Gunnedah Times!

The 2025 Gunnedah Times Footy Tipping Competition kicks off into a new season of action starting this weekend in Las Vegas.

A total of 40 business houses and reader footy tipping entries are taking part in this year’s competition with the Gunnedah Times.

Among those signing up on the readership field this year is Malcolm Leader.

Mr Leader has been a long-time supporter of the Canberra Raiders but also holds a soft spot for Queensland-based franchise, The Dolphins.

If he was to lead with his head instead of his heart, the first-time Gunnedah Times footy tipper named Penrith as good a chance as any of winning another NRL premiership this year. “They just have a way about them at present,” he said.

Also back for another year is Ray McCoy who led the 2024 regular season footy tipping competition heading into the closing rounds, only for Chris Mallon to sneak past to the win the first place grand final package.

Mr Mallon, who is a passionate Roosters supporter, finished the regular season on 259 points, just ahead of Ray in second on 257 points.

Also returning is evergreen Ian Jordan who was within reach of the top point scorers last season. Mr Jordan finished the regular season on equal third (251 points) alongside and Andrew Riordan, who has also signed up for another year.

The most confident of this year’s tippers is Phillip Donnelly – he even provided us with a little memo on his first tipping coupon this week, proudly proclaiming ‘I’m gonna win’.

In the 2025 Gunnedah Times Business House Footy Tipping Challenge, last year’s winners Davidson Cameron & Co is back for another season.

The Davidson Cameron & Co team was locked in a four-way fight to the finish alongside fellow Gunnedah businesses, A.C Whalan and Carter’s Pharmacy, which have also returned in 2025.

The winners of each footy tipping competition, reader and business house, will receive two tickets the 2025 NRL grand final, plus return airfares and accommodation courtesy of sponsor Radisson Blu at its five-star luxury Sydney Plaza hotel in the city’s centre.

Returning tippers are Jesse and Jamie Hinton, who have been in the Gunnedah Times NRL Reader Tipping competition since it began in 2021.

Gunnedah’s Julie and Curtis Dickinson are ready to go for the start of the 2025 NRL season.
