The Gunnedah Show Society has announced the eagerly awaited return of camel racing at the 2025 Gunnedah Show (April 4-6).
This thrilling event will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, April 5, in the main arena, promising excitement, laughter, and unforgettable entertainment for all attendees.
After its wildly successful return in 2024, the camel races are back, bigger and better than ever – these Camelus dromedarius, one-humpers, are ready to gallop their way into the spotlight!
Organisers this year will host three heats and a final to determine the ultimate Gunnedah Show Camel Racing Champion. Local jockeys have already signed up, but the show society is still on the lookout for more daring riders to take on this unique challenge.
“We are thrilled to bring back the beloved camel races to the show,” entertainment convenor Caroline Mitchell said. “Camel races were a cherished tradition in the 1990s, and after seeing the crowd’s excitement last year, we knew we had to keep this event going.”
The convenor encouraged individuals with vibrant personalities and a sense of adventure to saddle up.
“If you know someone in your business or community who has what it takes, we want to see them on the back of a camel! If you can ride a horse, you can ride a camel,” she said.
The 2024 Camel Racing Champion, Alex Hamlyn, took home the blue ribbon in a thrilling final. We would love to see her back again in 2025, defending her title against a new wave of challengers!
Last year, we were inundated with interest from locals eager to ride a camel, and the crowd went absolutely wild watching the races unfold.
“People really get behind the camel races,” Caroline said. “It’s so much fun to see locals cheering on their friends and participating in the show they love so much.”
