A new ‘wombat’ pedestrian crossing on Conadilly Street is in the final stages of design and awaiting funding approval for construction.

Wombat crossings consist of a platform raised to the same level as the adjacent pedestrian footpaths.

It is proposed the raised crossing would replace the existing painted crossing at the Henry Street intersection.

The design is being funded by the Get NSW Active program which offers funding for councils to deliver projects that create safe, easy, and enjoyable walking and bike trips.

Gunnedah Shire Council is working towards achieving 100 per cent completion of the design in preparation for the construction phase.

Design components completed so far include a plan for lighting at the pedestrian crossing and proposed pedestrian crossing plan at Conadilly Street.

Council has submitted three grant applications to fund the construction of the new crossing.

These applications were made to separate government funding bodies, and the outcomes are still pending.

One of the grant applications submitted by council in December was made to the Australian Government Black Spot Program.

This program provides funding to improve the physical conditions or management of locations specifically where crashes have occurred or are at risk of occurring.

In 2017, elderly Gunnedah resident Mon Ducrow died after being struck by a vehicle while using the pedestrian crossing.

The update on the crossing upgrade followed a report to the Gunnedah Local Traffic Committee.

The committee report to Gunnedah Shire Council’s February meeting noted minor changes to the crossing design such as removal of the kerb fencing component to meet current grant funding guideline requirements.
