Two of Australia’s leading classical musicians, pianist Konstantin Shamray and clarinettist David Griffiths, will perform in Gunnedah in a special chamber music recital at The Civic, in a program for clarinet and piano.

Together, they will highlight both instruments at their finest, with playing that is both expressive and full of character.

Griffiths, described by The Australian as possessing a “silky tone and easy execution”, is a highly regarded soloist, chamber musician and educator.

He has performed extensively across Australia and internationally, appearing with major orchestras and at leading festivals. He is known for his expressive, finely controlled sound.

Shamray rose to international prominence after winning both First Prize and the People’s Choice Award at the Sydney International Piano Competition.

Renowned for his dynamic and expressive playing, he performs with orchestras around the world and has built a reputation for performances that combine power, precision and sensitivity.

The program includes Brahms’ F minor Sonata, a work of lyricism and intensity, alongside Weber’s Grand Duo, a virtuosic showcase for clarinet and piano.

A solo piano work will also feature, with Novacek’s Four Rags bringing rhythmic energy and a playful close to the evening.

Gunnedah Conservatorium director Rebecca Ryan said the program has a wonderful sense of contrast and character, from the depth of Brahms to the energy and charm of the lighter works.

“These are the kinds of musicians you’d normally travel to a major city to hear with a symphony orchestra, so having them here in Gunnedah is something really special,” she said.

“And with the concert falling over Mother’s Day weekend, it’s also the perfect chance to treat your mum to something a little different.”

Konstantin Shamray and David Griffiths will perform at The Civic on Saturday, May 9, from 6.30pm.

Tickets cost $37 for adults, $32 for concession and $12 for children. Discover NSW Vouchers accepted.
