Stewart Mcclellan and his son Kai make a six-hour trek from the Sutherland region each year to take part in the Sinker to Shotgun competition.
Stewart has participated in this annual ‘Weeks of Speed’ competition for about five years, following an invitation from Gunnedah Sporting Clays committeeperson Scott Kelly after they met while camping at South West Rocks.
The saying ‘bring a friend’ also came into play as Stewart subsequently invited a friend from Wollongong.
Stewart said he enjoyed the fishing component more than the shooting component, as he found the latter “a bit more of a challenge”.
“The no-care factor, and hanging with a few mates” was what Stewart said he enjoyed most about the annual fishing trip at Lake Keepit.
“It’s a good stress-relief,” he said.
“It’s a good bunch of blokes, a good environment, and a great little community to be involved in.”
Stewart said this was also the only time he went fishing, while catching carp was a worthwhile activity as this type of fish was destructive and invasive.
