Gunnedah High School Year 7 Science has been busy learning about high school science and working safely in the laboratory this term. Students have engaged in some basic practicals using the scientific method to complete investigations.

A highlight of the term has been a visit from the UNE Discovery Voyager outreach and engagement program where students undertook activities in chemistry, forensics, ecology and scientific illustrations. The sessions were interactive, exposing students to different branches of science and possible career pathways.

Gunnedah High School’s P&C has donated a special tree to be planted in its newly beautified front garden in honour of Ms Sumien Bester.

Sumien was a dedicated TAS teacher at Gunnedah High for 10 years and sadly passed away last year. This tree will be a lasting tribute to her impact on our school community.

Success at Barradine Show

Gunnedah High School’s Show Team had an early start on Saturday, travelling to Baradine to present its Poll Dorset Gunndemar stud sheep. All students commendably presented the sheep including lamb, ewe and ram categories with the school awarded a number of places including two first places, four second places and two third places. The level of animal husbandry, team work and dedication these students displayed during this event was excellent representing Gunnedah High School with pride.

In the Ag Plot

The school Ag Plot has become a hive of activity with students being able to enjoy the fruits of their labour harvesting delicious watermelons and rockmelons.

A number of new animals have joined the school with four dairy cross poddy calves, which are student favourites at feeding time, and six merino wethers, as Year 10 students are preparing for the NSW School Merino Wether Challenge in August.

Students practised their junior sheep judging skills when they had a special visit from Karen Fogarty, who provided the first sheep to begin the school’s Poll Dorset stud Gunndemar in 2019.

Year 10 students are also enriching their agricultural skills with fortnightly visits to the school’s off-site farm and have enjoyed mustering, drenching, plumbing, fencing and cattle yard maintenance among other activities in the schedule.
