SCHOOL NEWS:
Kamilaroi Native Pizza Competition
Gunnedah Public School was excited to share an enriching experience its students recently engaged in—the Kamilaroi Native Pizza Competition. This initiative was made possible through the collaboration of several dedicated individuals and its support.
The aim: The primary goal of this project was to immerse students in the learning about local edible plants and animals holistically—connecting their understanding of these resources to Country, Gomeroi culture, healthy eating and future career opportunities. Students learned how to grow these ingredients and incorporate them into familiar dishes, culminating in the creation of delicious pizzas.
What happened: In Week 4, the school welcomed Jamala and Brendan who sparked engaging discussions about local food knowledge and the adaptability of seasonal produce. Year 6 students were particularly enthusiastic as they developed their pizza concepts, drawing from their understanding of totems and food availability in Gunnedah.
As part of this initiative, students also designed unique pizza box artwork that was featured at the NAIDOC celebration in Wee Waa during the school holidays. The pizzas they created showcased local ingredients, including Binamayaa (saltbush) flour, bunya nut pesto, lemon myrtle, bush turkey, sundried tomatoes and feta.
Positive feedback: GPS received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the event organisers and facilitators. The pizzas not only impressed but also left a lasting impression, with minimal leftovers at the end of the day!
The initiative significantly enhanced students’ appreciation for local culture and food while fostering a sense of pride in their identity. The school thanked everyone involved, helping to nurture a culture of learning and respect for the land and heritage.
What’s next: The pizza will be featured at Nosh Narrabri in August and an invite will be shared soon.
Teachers v Students Touch Football
The legendary ‘Year 6 vs Teachers’ touch football match was held at end of last term and what a game it was. The Year 6 students showed up ready to run, dodge and dazzle… and the teachers, we showed up with sheer determination and a game plan by super coach Mr Dowe. Despite a few dramatic dives and a lot of competitive banter, the teachers walked away with the win.
The school offered thanks to the fantastic referee Ryley Bourke, who somehow managed to keep a straight face and the game running smoothly.
Overall, a brilliant way to end Term 2 full of laughs, teamwork and a few aching bones from teachers reliving their glory days.
