The Gunnedah Red Devils women gained some much-needed match practice last Saturday as they defeated the Quirindi Lions 17-10 in cold, wet and muddy conditions at Quirindi Rugby Club.
Billed as a ‘friendly match’ – with Quirindi rarely fielding a women’s team this year – there were plenty of strong tackles, scrums and slippery passes.
As last Saturday was ladies’ day for the hosts, they scraped together a mix of beginners, returning players and seasoned campaigners while also fielding a couple of mums from the club’s original 2012 ladies day – along with their daughters.
Layne Scheithe scored two tries, and teammate Jean Littlewood scored one for Gunnedah while debutant Laura McDermott was rated the best of the Red Devils.
Georgia Moore and Faith Green scored a try each for Quirindi.
The Lions expressed their appreciation in a social media message: “Massive thanks to the Gunnedah ladies for not only giving us the opportunity to take the field, but for being so supportive both on and off it. You were fun, welcoming, and an absolute joy to play against.”
With one round remaining before the finals, Gunnedah’s top four hopes are on the line this Saturday as the Red Devils are scheduled to host the second-placed Tamworth Pirates who demolished them 75-0 back on June 21.
The fourth-placed Gunnedah is five points ahead of the fifth-placed Barraba, which will seek to snatch fourth place with a victory against the sixth-placed Inverell.
