Eight girls from Gunnedah Gymnastics Centre are set to compete in the state championship at the Sydney Gymnastics and Aquatic Centre (SGAC) on August 30 and 31.
The championship will feature the top ranking 160 gymnasts in each level throughout NSW.
The Gunnedah gymnasts in levels 5, 6 and 7 produced some impressive performances at selection trials in Sydney in recent weeks to earn their places.
In trial 1, the five level 5 gymnasts ranked in the all-around, with Lilah Edmunds claiming gold in the junior division and securing gold on vault, bars and floor.
Gunnedah achieved a clean sweep in the senior division via the top four placegetters.
Kate Randall won gold, Ava Willoughby won silver, and Hadley Durrant won bronze while Mia Geddes placed fourth.
Kate also received bronze on vault, gold on bars (equal), silver on beam and silver on floor.
Ava picked up three apparatus medals; gold on vault and bars (equal) and bronze on floor. Hadley secured silver on bars and bronze on beam and floor, while Mia claimed bronze on vault and gold on floor.
In national level 6, Ruby Cygan brought home the bronze medal in the all-around and a silver on vault.
While the state trials took place, Mikayla Ferguson participated in the Border Challenge competition on the Gold Coast. Earlier in the year, she qualified to represent NSW in the second of two teams to contest this national event.
The gymnasts competed in a team-only competition on day one, with Mikayla’s team ranking fifth out of 10 teams on the national scene.
The following day the competitors fought it out for individual awards on apparatus and in the all-around, with Mikayla putting in a strong performance and ranking seventh on vault.
It was back to Sydney last weekend for the second state qualifier for the level 5 to 7 gymnasts.
On the Saturday, Mikayla was joined by teammate Kelly Briggs – also in level 7 – to present their routines for the judges.
Mikayla placed fourth in the all-around competition after winning gold on vault, silver on beam and bronze on floor, while Kelly claimed silver on vault and ranked third in the overall standings.
Lilah again won the all-around in the level 5 junior division, having achieved gold on vault and beam, and bronze on bars and floor.
Kate also confirmed her No. 1 ranking in the level 5 senior division, having won gold in the all-around and gold on vault, bars and beam.
Ava filled the bronze-medal position in the all-around, with silver on vault and floor and bronze on bars.
Hadley ranked fourth overall and claimed silver on bars, while Mia placed fifth overall and achieved bronze on floor.
The aforementioned girls will be joined by 14 of their teammates competing in levels 3 and 4, to contest the North West Championships in Armidale on August 16.
Mikayla Ferguson represented NSW in the recent Border Challenge at the Gold Coast.
