The Gunnedah Bulldogs concluded their Group 4 leaguetag season with a 46-0 drubbing of the Boggabri Kangaroos at Kitchener Park last Saturday.
The match had no bearing on the seven-team competition ladder, as the Bulldogs were guaranteed to finish fifth while the Kangaroos were assured of last place.
Gunnedah’s victory was its sixth of the year, while Boggabri finished the season without a win.
Zara Mannion, Tarryn Heinrich and Dakota Durrant bagged two tries each last Saturday, while three of their teammates notched one apiece.
Tara Wilkinson-Ryan scored the opening try early on, before Mannion scurried away for her first of the day in the seventh minute.
Heinrich’s first try came four minutes later, before Boggabri’s Ashlyn Summers produced a great diving tag to halt Wilkinson-Ryan in the 17th minute.
Durrant touched down later in the same set, and the score remained 20-0 until half-time as Jaida Fletcher and Tarsha Smith displayed some great defence for the visiting side.
The second half was nearly five minutes old when Heinrich’s second try made the score 24-0, and then Mannion broke away a few minutes later to complete her double.
Nautica Eather scored next, and then Durrant scored soon after the restart as she accepted a pass and made a long break.
Marlee Urquhart posted the final try in the last two minutes, with Zoe Fleming’s fifth conversion completing the scoring.
Having missed the finals for the second year running, Gunnedah was again left to wonder what might have been.
After forfeiting in round one and losing their first two outings, the Bulldogs were unable to compensate for their sluggish start to the season.
They also weren’t helped by season-ending injuries to Claire Jones and Deneka Jones around the halfway stage of the season.
