Gunnedah’s own Reggie Stewart (pictured) has claimed the title of junior NSW state champion at just seven years of age, following her success at the NSW State Road Cycling Championships in Wagga Wagga.
In her first ever road race, Reggie achieved victory in the 7km event as she tackled a technical and rain-soaked course with skill well beyond her years.
Reggie backed it up with another win in the Criterium race (10 minutes plus three laps), where she attacked at just the right moment to surge into the lead.
To round out her debut, Reggie placed second in the 3km individual time trial.
Sporting success has run in the family, with Reggie’s grandmother Donna Hickey and mum Sarah Stewart being national triathlon champions while Reggie’s uncle Jack Hickey was a state and national cycling champion in his youth.
Behind it all is Reggie’s grandfather and coach John Hickey, who has coached numerous athletes to state titles. Having guided his own children to success, John now shares the same journey with his granddaughter.
Through dedication, hard training and with a strong sporting family behind her, Reggie Stewart has made her mark.
