Grand final hosting rights will be up for grabs, as the Gunnedah Poochettes face arch-rival the Inverell Saints at the Inverell-based Varley Oval this Saturday in week one of the AFL North West NSW women’s semi-finals.
While the winning team gains a week’s break in addition to the certainty of a home grand final, the losing team subsequently faces the winner of this Saturday’s other semi-final which features the third-placed Tamworth Swans and the fourth-placed Tamworth Kangaroos.
The Poochettes are coming off a 14.13.97 to 1.0.6 victory against the Kangaroos at Wolseley Park, while the Saints are coming off an 11.16.82 to 1.0.6 win over the Swans at Tamworth.
Last Saturday’s victory in Gunnedah was a fitting occasion for Abbey Ruttley and Meg Foster, both of whom notched 50 appearances for the Poochettes.
Braie Devine and Macey Carlyon landed a goal each, before a double to Amy Clark helped the hosts to a 4.2.26 to 0 lead at quarter-time.
Gunnedah found it harder to find the target in the second term as there were six behinds and only two majors, before the hosts landed three majors and three behinds in the third term.
The visiting team’s sole points came in the third term when Hayley Beck kicked a goal.
The hosts saved their most prolific quarter until last, kicking 5.2.32 in the final term.
The Poochettes and Saints have met three times so far this year, with two wins for Inverell and one for Gunnedah.
