Thirty-five soccer teams from the Northern Inland region flocked to the Geoff Morgan Soccer Fields for the junior girls gala day on the final day of last month.

Gunnedah, Narrabri, Tamworth, Moore Creek, Kootingal and Inverell teams took part, as age groups ranged from 5/6 to 15/16 years.

The final day of winter was bathed in splendid sunshine for the occasion, after the event was postponed from July due to wet weather.

An observer remarked that the opening lines of the Electric Light Orchestra song Mr Blue Sky were apt: ‘The sun is shining in the sky, there ain’t a cloud in sight.’

The future of female soccer in the region looked bright, as the players gave their all while playing with their mates and forming new connections.

Gunnedah’s highest achieving teams were the 5/6 Goal Queens, 8/9 Golden Girls and 14/16 United FC, each of whom achieved a runner-up placing.

Thanks were given to everyone involved in some way, including the players, parents, grandparents, volunteers and committee.
