NRL was the talk of the village at McLean Care Alkira recently as its footy tipping winners were announced.
It was Don Stone who claimed a satisfying top spot, after being runner-up in last year’s competition.
In second place it was Carol White while third place went to Shirley Kelly.
Bubbles and beers paired perfectly with party pies while waiting in anticipation for the announcement from the Family of League Foundation at Alkira recently.
The charity runs the competition each year with volunteer Peter Haley stopping by each week to update the leaderboard. This was a task of Don Pascoe up until last year.
This year, volunteers handed out shirts and caps as a keepsake for tipping players.
Family of League Foundation volunteer John Campbell said the visits “brighten up the residents’ day”.
“The footy tipping gives them something to look forward to every week,” he said.
It may provide good fun and lighthearted competitiveness for the residents but John said it also benefits the volunteers.
“It gives us the satisfaction of knowing we’re doing something positive for them,” he said.
