Athletes from the Gunnedah Triathlon Club achieved impressive results in the Sparke Helmore Newcastle City Triathlon last Sunday.

The sprint distance race which comprised a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run featured a rough ocean swim and a hilly, technical course.

Sarah Stewart placed first in the women’s 35-39 age group and finished ninth overall female, while her mum Donna Hickey placed first in the women’s 65-69 age group.

It was a memorable occasion for three generations, as Sarah’s daughter Reggie claimed a third placing while the coach was Reggie’s granddad, Sarah’s dad, and Donna’s husband John.

The Gunny Hot Mess Express team featuring Katie Spinks (swim), Nichole Carlyon (bike) and Cherie Wark (run) finished second in the women’s teams category.

In the juniors, Josh Spinks won by more than a minute after dominating from start to finish while Cooper Galton surged through the field on the run to claim silver.

Pippa Wark placed third while Pippa Galton came fourth in the 10-11 years girls race.

In the 7-9 years girls, Reggie placed third while Rosie Galton and Harper Levett occupied the next two placings in a tight finish.

Jonty Nichols finished seventh in his first official triathlon as he was in the 7-9 years boys, with Samuel Wark close behind in ninth.

“From the very young to the very old, Gunnedah triathletes exceeded all expectations and created a great team atmosphere,” John Hickey said.
