The State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will lead an investigation after a man was shot by police at a Quia Road property last Friday afternoon.

NSW Police announced a critical incident investigation had started in relation to the incident that stemmed from a welfare check.

Addressing media following the shooting, Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland said calls were raised by members of the public who saw the man in the street earlier in the day. Police arrived on-site at almost 2pm.

“Police have gone to that location to check on the welfare of the male involved,” Asst Comm Holland said.

Police spoke to the man outside before he retreated inside and returned armed with a bow and arrow.

“Police have talked to this gentleman for a short period of time before retreating behind the police vehicle with the male approaching them,” Asst Comm Holland said.

“The male has pointed the bow and arrow at police and, unfortunately, police have had to fire upon this male hitting him once.

“These matters are obviously split second decisions by police on the scene.”

The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a gunshot wound but he died at the scene.

Asst Comm Holland confirmed that support measures were in place for family on the scene as well as the police involved.

The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
