Spotlight: AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
The library has a range of activities to keep your child occupied after the school day is over.
Bookends Literacy Assist is a programme that matches readers who wish to practice reading, with adults who will listen and provide guidance with pronunciation, expression, etc. Each reading session runs for twenty minutes, long enough to reinforce skills without becoming repetitive. Multiple sessions can be run with short breaks in between. Places are available on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday afternoons between 3.00 – 4.30pm. Bookings are required for these sessions, so call the library on (02) 6740 2190 for more information and to be matched with a ‘listener’.
The library is starting a Comic Hub which will run on Tuesday afternoons from 3.30pm. Starting in March, these meetings will be open to comic, manga and graphic novel lovers of all ages and tastes. Keep an eye out for more information…
Spotlight: NEW BOOKS
Why Do Birds Sing? (598 CLE) by Dr. Gráinne Cleary will answer all your questions about birdsong (and others you hadn’t thought to ask). The term ‘bird brain’ has led us to underestimate the brainpower it takes to hear a song, remember it and practise until it is reproduced correctly. We are only just starting to realise the complexity behind their beauty.
Love, Al Dente (AFR LOB) is a deliciously tantalising, will-they-won’t-they culinary affair by Jenna Lo Bianco. Alessio is a pedantic, uptight former chef who vowed never to step foot in a commercial kitchen again. Francesca is a passionate Italian cook who is in desperate need of a knight in shining chef whites. Will they help each other, or is it a recipe for disaster?
Di Morrissey’s new novel is The Endless Sky (AFA MOR). When TV presenter Nicole and savvy producer Stacie are sent into outback Australia to reveal a part of the country few have visited and even less understand, they uncover secrets, whispered stories and a history as old as the dinosaurs.
“Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift.” Kate DiCamillo
