The 2026 Men’s Health Walk to support the local hospice Dorothy House was organised in March, in England, where Gunnedah-born Matt Palmer currently resides and teaches mathematics.
Matt joined the walk after a teaching colleague, who was only in his 50s, recently died of cancer.
The route started at the hospice in Winsley, along the Kennet and Avon Canal, concluding at the Bath Pavillion.
More than 500 walkers on the day raised almost 50,000 pounds. Matt exceeded his goal of 100 pounds, thanks to friends and family, raising a total of 130 pounds.
The hospice celebrates it’s 50th anniversary this year. Fundraising means continuing to support patients and their families within the local community, funding a nurse on an advice line, reassuring, advising and guiding patients, families and health care professionals.
Funding an expert counsellor for young adults with life-limiting illness, helping them feel less alone.
Also funding compassionate, skilled and experienced Hospice at Home carers to provide care overnight, enabling a patient to stay at home at the end of their life.
Matt’s parents, Jeff and Shirley Palmer, agree it is a very worthy cause.
