Scams and cyber safety were in focus at Gunnedah Evening VIEW Club’s dinner meeting with the Greater Bank Gunnedah branch manager Tammy Megson as guest speaker.

Tammy was accompanied by fellow employee Ciara Eveleigh for a night of fun and friendship as well as education for members – VIEW …Voice, Interests and Education for Women.

“Scammers are here to stay,” Tammy said.

“They are getting smarter and taking advantage of new technology.

“A definite red flag is if a caller asks for your account details – it is best to tell them that you will check with staff at your local branch and then block the number.

“Internet banking is safe but not safe – it is a convenient way to access your account information in real time but it is important to remain vigilant and never respond to online or phone requests to confirm details of the internet banking account, including access code PIN number or password.

“Your passwords need to be strong, with upper and lower case, numbers and symbols – and changed regularly.

“It is also important to update phones and computers.”

Tammy also warned members to be aware of scams, such as spam emails, chain letters and persons claiming to be a representative of government departments, financial institutions or other businesses.

“If you are concerned always contact your financial institution in person,” she said.

Members expressed appreciation for the interesting talk and valuable information and then celebrated Easter with an exchange of gifts for each member’s secret Friend in
