AWARD-winning short film festival Flickerfest will return to The Civic Theatre on Sunday 2 August, bringing a showcase of acclaimed Australian and international films to local audiences.
Celebrating its 35th year, Flickerfest is Australia’s only Academy Qualifying and BAFTA Recognised Short Film Festival and has built a reputation for showcasing some of the world’s best short films.
The program will feature two sessions, beginning with the Best of Australian Shorts from noon to 2pm.
The collection includes comedy, drama and heartfelt stories from emerging and established filmmakers, with performances by well-known Australian actors including Hugo Weaving, Kat Stewart, Colin Lane, Peter Phelps and Michala Banas.
Audience members attending the sessions will be offered complimentary appetisers before the second screening from 3pm to 5pm.
The international program features eight films from around the world exploring themes of friendship, family, resilience and human connection.
Gunnedah Shire Council economy and growth manager Susan Frater said the festival continued to bring high-quality independent cinema to the region.
“Flickerfest is known for exceptional storytelling, innovative ideas and original voices, so if you’ve never experienced it, I encourage you to step into the realm of independent cinema at The Civic Theatre,” Ms Frater said.
Among the Australian films are stories of a baby shower thrown into turmoil by the unexpected arrival of the expectant mother’s estranged father, a reluctant dog “therapist” helping to hold together a retired couple’s relationship, and a young support worker preparing to farewell a long-term client living with younger-onset dementia. The international selection includes a story of two struggling men who form an unlikely bond during an impromptu sing-off in a neighbourhood pub, a friendship between a teenage boy and a lonely widow after a football lands in her garden, and an eight-year-old girl adjusting to life following the arrival of her baby brother.
Tickets are $15 per session or $25 for both sessions. Flickerfest contains mature themes and is not recommended for children under 15.
