Gunnedah pharmacists Lisa Hagley and Annette Osmond are this month celebrating 25 years in business.
Now operating as Discount Drug Store Gunnedah, the Conadilly Street chemist operated for many years under the ownership of Lisa’s father, Terry.
When the business changed hands in the year 2000, it was a busy time in many ways for Lisa and Annette.
The pair was not only juggling young families and children but also all the unknowns of a running business for the first time.
The pharmacy has seen changes over the years – both in a structural sense with building renovations and in the nature of work undertaken.
“Pharmacists have taken on more of professional role,” Lisa said.
The “expanded scope of practice” at Discount Drug Store Gunnedah has allowed the pharmacy to provide more health services to their customers.
This includes trials for trained pharmacists to provide community access to important medications and treatments, usually only available with a prescription.
“We’ve enjoyed that and offering those things for our customers,” Lisa added.
The pharmacy is currently participating in a trial to help eligible people manage common skin conditions including mild to moderate eczema (atopic dermatitis), shingles (herpes zoster), school sores (impetigo) and mild plaque psoriasis.
One of Lisa and Annette’s most memorable aspects from the last 25 years is the people – including the staff, some who have been part of the business since the beginning.
“We have all remained really good friends,” Annette said.
Customers are also a big part of the community pharmacy philosophy at Discount Drug Store Gunnedah.
“You have that personal relationship with customers, you know the people and can follow up with them,” Annette said.
