Gunnedah is bracing for its second major flood event this month.
Authorities are warning the Namoi River at Gunnedah is “likely” to exceed the major flood level on Saturday.
As of 4pm Wednesday, the Bureau of Meteorology advises the Namoi River at Gunnedah is currently at 2.22 m and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Namoi River at Gunnedah is expected to exceed the minor flood level (7.30 m) Thursday evening.
The river is likely to exceed the moderate flood level (7.60 m) early Friday morning.
The river is likely to exceed the major flood level (7.90 m) during Saturday 23 August. Further rises are possible with forecast rain.
Since early Wednesday morning, light to moderate rainfall has been observed across the Peel and Namoi River catchments.
Rain is forecast to intensify overnight Wednesday into Thursday, with heavy falls expected.
Water storages along the Peel and and Namoi Rivers are currently full, and the catchments aresaturated.
This combination of heavy rainfall, saturated catchments, and full storages may lead to flooding along the Peel and Namoi Rivers, potentially similar to the events experienced earlier this month.
The NSW SES advises people should stay informed by monitoring warnings issued by NSW SES on their website and Facebook page, listening to their local ABC radio station, and checking the latest weather information from the Bureau of Meteorology online.
